Why My '3x3 System' Makes Memorizing Faster, Easier, And More Reliable

Never Forget A Piece Or Worry About Memory Slips Again

Week after week, I get messages from a small (but growing) group of switched-on musicians:

Amateurs who used to suffer from constant memory slips now feel totally secure and perform flawlessly from memory.

Then there are the professionals who get given new music to memorise every week. They report that this now takes them less time and causes them less stress.

Even those in their 70s (and beyond) who believed their memorizing days were behind them are now celebrating remembering pieces confidently once more.

And the many people who had always considered themselves 'bad memorizers'... Or who had tried memorization before only to fail repeatedly... They tell me they're now mastering pieces they never imagined playing without sheet music.

In short, musicians from amateur to pro level, across all instruments and musical genres...

... are using my '3x3 system' to memorize music quickly and effortlessly.

They are no longer merely playing music; they are the music. The notes are a part of them, as familiar as the lines on their palms. This is not just playing by heart; it's playing from the soul.

Keep reading to discover why your brain is designed to forget (rather than remember). And how the '3x3 system' allows you to override this so that you remember pieces forever.

Again and again, I found myself saying, "Of course! It's so obvious!" but obviously it wasn't. That's a sign that you've just learned something valuable and fundamental. I've been so inspired that I've asked every member of my band to sign up as well.

Your Brain Was DESIGNED To Forget!

Humans evolved hardwired biological processes for forming memories because this was necessary for survival. This means everyone has the ability to create long-term musical memories. Regardless of age or skill level. Whether you play from sheet music or learn by ear.

However...

Storing everything in long-term memory would have been an evolutionary disaster. Excessive memory formation is energy-intensive and would overload the brain -- making it impossible to differentiate vital memories from trivial ones.

So our brains developed a 'gateway' process to filter out unnecessary memories. This gateway uses specific physical and environmental cues to decide if a potential memory is significant enough for long-term storage. And it actively blocks other candidates that don't meet these criteria.

Merely repeating a piece over and over again may give your brain the information you want to store... But it lacks those vital cues that will open the gateway. So you make little or no progress however hard you try.

If you want a different result, then you need to understand the biology and work with it rather than against it. That way you tap into deep brain circuits that will lock in the memories forever. It's not only efficient and reliable but also more enjoyable.

Having never played a piece from memory, I was unsure about my chance of success. I had always thought repetition would do the job and it hadn't.
Mark's system took work to implement but it was effective. I memorized a 4-minute solo and performed it in public.

Why The '3x3 System' Works So Well

The act of memorising is not one single process. Instead, your brain actually moves information through three distinct stages before it ends up in your long-term memory. You need to give your brain the correct cues in the right sequence in order for a new memory to pass through all three stages successfully.

And in order to retain musical memories effectively you need to record them as three separate streams.

When you combine the three stages of memorisation with the three memory streams then you'll memorise music much more effectively. It will go straight into your long-term memory and remain there securely. As a result, you'll feel confident playing from memory and enjoy your music more.

Combining the three stages and three streams is simple. But you need to do some very specific things in the correct order for it to work properly. That's why I created my '3x3 system' -- to allow anyone to apply this to their music quickly and easily.

The Three Stages of Memorisation

Simply playing a piece over and over again is ineffective. Deliberately applying the three stages is the key to memories that stick.

How The Memory Streams Work

Adding in extra streams is probably the easiest way to improve your results. You'll make stronger memories that hold up under pressure.

Evidence That The 3x3 System Works

This has worked a treat. I’m now playing completely from memory. My sister, who's played piano all her life (me about 3 years) could never memorise a piece: I am proud to say I am teaching her. Thank you Mark.

Tricia Koury

A really excellent course. I was able to memorise a Chopin Nocturne and a jazz standard using Mark's system. The Nocturne would have taken me months to learn but I was able to memorise it within a couple of weeks which was amazing.

Anna Stewart

Helped me make the process of memorising music much easier and less stressful. The results are quite amazing; within a few weeks I am memorising music that I would never have dared try before. Another cracking course from Mark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any more testimonials?

Sure - see below...

Does this work if I don't read sheet music?

Yes. The course is based on the underlying biology of how the brain forms new memories. This applies to anything we want to remember -- however we choose to learn it.

It doesn't matter if you use sheet music, learn tunes by ear, or use any other method. The system will work just fine.

Is the course suitable for me if I'm not an advanced musician?

The course works from the fundamental principles of neuroscience . These apply to everyone because they are hardwired into how the human brain works.

So you can apply these concepts to any material you’re working on at any level.

Will this work for my instrument? What about for singers?

The system works for any instrument and for any style of music. However, the situation is slightly more complicated for singers...

The fundamental concepts in the course apply to how we learn anything. But the exercises are specifically designed to apply to learning musical notes -- not to memorise words. You can still apply all the ideas in the course to memorising song lyrics but you will need to adapt the exercises yourself.

Singers who have gone through the course already have had mixed success with this. Some have reported back that they found it fantastically helpful for memorising lyrics as well as the notes. Others have told me that it was great for memorising the notes but didn't help them so much with the lyrics.

How long is the course?

This is not a mammoth brain dump of all that you could possibly know about memorising music. The focus is on giving you only the key information that you need. And showing you how to apply it effectively.

The video lessons that make up the bulk of the course last just over an hour. So you could get through the whole thing very quickly (although you will probably want to review the important parts more than once).

However, the real benefits will come when you put the information into practice. So allow a good amount of practice time to do that.

There is also almost 2 hours of a recorded Q&A session. You don't need to go through this material, but it is there to help you out if you want. And there are timestamps for the various questions that get answered so you can skip to the parts that are relevant to you.

Can I go through the course at my own pace?

Absolutely!

You get lifetime access to the course. You can go through the lessons at whatever speed you want, and you can revisit them as often as you like in the future.

How long do I have access to the course for?

You get lifetime access to the course and all the bonuses when you join. This is all for one single payment -- there are no rebills.

So you can go through everything at your own pace and review the lessons whenever you like.

How do I access the course after signing up?

You will receive INSTANT digital access to the course. After you sign up, you’ll get an email straight away with all your login details and the link to access the dedicated course website.

Which means that just minutes from now you could be well on your way to playing freely from memory...

There's nothing to ship, and you'll have access to all the material for life.

You can access the course on whatever device you prefer. Phone, laptop, tablet etc - they all work just fine.

The lessons are primarily delivered through video, but there’s text instructions and other materials where needed to support the key concepts and exercises.

Is there a guarantee?

Of course.

If you feel like you’re not getting any results in terms of memorising more quickly and easily... and playing from memory more freely…

Just send my support team an email and we’ll issue a refund right away.

Will this help me memorise other things besides music?

The course is specifically designed for memorising music – so the practical exercises all assume that that’s your goal.

However, since the fundamental neuroscience principles apply to memory in general, they can be used to help memorise anything. This includes lyrics, music theory, and so on… but it should also work with topics beyond music.

Just be aware that the course may be missing concepts and techniques that have no relevance to memorising music but which are helpful for other areas.

I would not recommend joining the course if your aim is only to memorise other things. But you may well find that this is a nice extra bonus on top of improving your ability to memorise music.

Here’s what people are saying about the course

I can learn music easier, faster and far more reliably

Although I could memorise pieces before doing the course, having done the course I can learn music easier, faster and far more reliably whether playing from memory or sheet music.

The course has boosted my confidence and competence to just sit and play with enjoyment. Thank you Mark.

Seemed impossible... now it happened while having fun in less than a month

I found a new joy of playing the piano! I have always been a good sight reader, but I was very bad at memorizing pieces. Now I started to make memorizing part of my practice and it is a totally new way of making music. I feel addicted to my piano again. I absolutely recommend the memorizing course! I cant believe that I can play 3rd movement of moonlight sonata by heart now or even Debussy or Chopin - these pieces always seemed impossible for me to memorize, but now it happened while having fun in less than a month. I am truly thankful for that and already recommended the course to a friend.

Memorising a piece in two days that took others a week

I didn't have any memory problems before. I did have a process which worked for me, eg. memorising a piece in two days that took others a week.

The course confirmed the validity of what I was doing so I can endorse everything Mark advises. This method works because it's what I've been doing successfully for years.

What I did learn was the theory behind what I was doing. The course structures and explains exactly what to do and how to do it. It also tells you why.
You could pick this up over many years through trial and error or you could do yourself a favour and learn it all here.

I have experienced results right away

Clear cut and organized. If one is willing to devote the time and is patient, he/she will see results. In the brief period I have worked on the lessons I have experienced results right away, and intend to continue until I see more of... which I am sure I will.

Cleared things up in just the 1st lesson

This course goes straight to the point and cleared up my approach to memorizing after just the first lesson. Filled with strategies to get the most out of your practice. I'm excited to move forward faster with building my repertoire!

The 'one extra note' technique was an eye-opener

I'm a experienced musician playing a lot by memory. The systematic approach helped me find weak spots in my learning strategy and to clarify strategies I already used but now can use better.

Now I work to strengthen my muscle memory. I use one step ahead visualisation. Also the division of four measures blocks + one extra note technique was an eye-opener.

Practical steps I can follow right away [plus] a really useful Q&A session

This was a great course for me. It is not too long. It explains the theory behind memorisation and then goes on to provide practical steps I can follow right away.

Having done that, there is a really useful Q&A session with students that helps reinforce the learning and make things clearer.
